How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business?

Ask it the way a customer would — not by name first. Open ChatGPT (and Gemini and Perplexity, since they answer differently) and ask things like "best [your service] near [your city]" or "who should I hire for [the problem you solve]?" If you don't appear, that's your real visibility. Then ask about your business by name: "Is [business name] legitimate? What do they do?" — and check every fact in the answer, because AI engines confidently repeat wrong hours, wrong services, and even confuse businesses with similar names. Do this monthly with the same set of questions so you can tell whether you're actually improving. That before-and-after panel is exactly how we measure our own clients' AI visibility.

The longer answer.

The name-collision check matters more than most owners expect. If another company shares your name anywhere in the country, AI engines can blend the two — answering questions about you with the other company's location, reviews, or licenses. The fix is entity work: consistent name, address, and identifiers everywhere the engines look, plus machine-readable records that prove which business is which.

When an answer gets a fact wrong, it isn't random — the engine is reading stale or contradictory data from somewhere: an unclaimed listing, an old directory entry, a description that says one thing while your site says another. Finding and fixing those sources is unglamorous work, but it's the difference between AI recommending you and AI hedging.
